London, 18 March 2020 – At the end of the week, JJ Martin, founder of the Milan-based “high energy” brand La DoubleJ will take over Sotheby’s London galleries and translate her passion for maximalist design, vintage, kaleidoscopic colours and striking patterns into a vibrant exhibition – weaving together a cornucopia of treasures from different genres and centuries.

With a growing number of Sotheby’s clients collecting across categories, the exhibition will juxtapose Fine Art and Luxury. Modern and Contemporary African and Middle Eastern Art will sit in dialogue with vintage jewels, in an unexpected scenography that enhances the beauty of the works.

Martin’s joyful aesthetic will be further dramatised by the vision of the creative duo Patrick Kinmonth and Antonio Monfreda, who are behind some of the most inspiring fashion exhibitions of the past decades, from the Met’s “Dangerous Liaisons: Fashion and Furniture in the 18th Century” to “Valentino: Master of Couture’ at Somerset House and more recently Chatsworth’s “House Style”.

Talking about the project, JJ Martin said: “I have developed an obsession for vintage over the years so it was a real pleasure to embark on this collaboration. Our aim was to create a visual feast and use our playful, bold, bright designs to shed unexpected light on the works of art and objects in the exhibition. We wanted the installation to be whimsical, fun and punchy but also with an exquisite attention to detail.”

JJ Martin’s vibrant melee of colours and media will be available to visit or view virtually on Sothebys.com from 20th to 24th March, with an accompanying stream of snapshots across social media channels (incl. our Instagram handles @sothebys and @SothebysJewels, Twitter and Facebook).
