For Art Basel Miami Beach’s online viewing room, Metro Pictures presents paintings, drawings, and sculpture by Chinese artist Cui Jie. The artist’s meticulously layered works are influenced by the rapidly transforming urban landscape of China and draw upon the three cities in which the artist has lived: Shanghai, where she was born and currently resides; Hangzhou, where she attended the China Academy of Art; and Beijing, where she began her career as an artist. Cui’s work often makes reference to existing architectural structures while incorporating unconventional futuristic elements like spiral slides and sky bridges, recalling a range of references from science fiction to Soviet communism.
