Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Jürgen Flimm’s production of Ludwig van Beethoven’s «Fidelio», which premiered in the spring of 1992, sparked renewed interest in the opera. The press toasted the polarizing musical approach – one that was unusual for the early 1990s – as a «tremendous moment for the perception of Beethoven». Harnoncourt had a congenial artistic partner at his side in director Jürgen Flimm, whose stage production struck the right balance between historical realism and abstract storytelling. This successful production was revived numerous times, and was recorded in 2004 with a world-class cast. Two young shooting stars made their debuts in the opera’s lead roles: German tenor Jonas Kaufmann as the prisoner Florestan, and Finnish soprano Camilla Nylund as his beloved Leonore, who disguises herself as Fidelio to free Florestan.
This recording, from the year 2004, will be available on demand and free of charge on the Opernhaus website from Friday, April 30 at 6:00pm through Sunday, May 2 at midnight.
