Michael Werner Gallery is pleased to present a selection of paintings and sculptures by the modern master Jean Arp (b. 1886, d. 1966).  Born in Strasbourg, a city of the border of France and Germany, Arp lived between France and Switzerland.  As a founding member of Dada, Arp believed in natural and irrational order over reason.  He was an accomplished poet and painter and is renowned for his biomorphic sculptures.  Experimenting with chance, Arp never started sculpting with a shape in mind.  Instead he allowed intuition to guide him through the process, resulting in sensual forms full of movement.  Alfred H. Barr, Jr, founding director of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, proclaimed Arp “a one-man laboratory for the discovery of a new form.” His works are held in the greatest public collections around the world.
